The office acts as a direct link to the county board and subsequently to all business matters pertinent to the county board. The office handles all vital records for the county, i.e. birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, and genealogy. Accounts payable and payroll are also handled through the office. Land records (i.e. real estate deeds, mortgages, oil and mineral deeds and assignments) are kept in the land records overseen by the clerk's office and are recorded in that office as well. The office also handles tax levies from the assorted units of government throughout the county, cuts and calculates the rates for property taxes so that tax bills can be printed and money collected by the treasurer's office, and also acts as the collector for delinquent property taxes. The office of the county clerk is the election authority for Lawrence County and is tasked with administering and supervising elections and maintaining the voter registration database for the county. Finally, the county clerk is the lead Freedom of Information Act officer for the county. All FOIA requests transmitted to the county are reviewed and answered by the county clerk.
